A Hero on and off the Field
Massarelli’s legacy extends far beyond the diamond. A U.S. Army paratrooper during the Korean War, he bravely served his country before returning home to Southington. But it was his dedication to the youth of his town that truly endeared him to the community.

The impact of Massarelli’s coaching can still be felt in Southington today. In recognition of his contributions, the Southington North Senior League baseball field at 776 Woodruff St. bears his name. And in 2011, he was inducted into the Southington Sports Hall of Fame, an honor that solidified his place in the town’s history.
A Life Well-Lived
Massarelli’s civic involvement was extensive throughout his long life. He was an active member of American Legion Post 72 and the Southington Elks Club, among other organizations. His commitment to his community was unwavering, and his dedication to the youth of Southington left an indelible mark on their lives.
A Difficult Loss
At the March 24 Southington Town Council meeting, Chairman Paul Chaplinsky paid tribute to Massarelli with a moment of silence and words of remembrance. “He was a mentor and coach to many of the youths in the league,” Chaplinsky said. “He enjoyed mentoring pitchers. So he was known for that and much more in the community. He was loved in the community. So, it’s going to be a difficult loss.”
The loss of Gerald Massarelli is a significant one for the people of Southington. His spirit and dedication to the community will be missed, but his legacy will live on.
