UDB partners with AGF to Scale up Sustainable Lending to SMEs, Women, and Youth-Affiliated Businesses

Introduction

Uganda Development Bank (UDB), the country’s national Development Finance Institution, has recently signed a Loan Portfolio Guarantee agreement with the African Guarantee Fund (AGF). This partnership aims to increase lending to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Women, and Youth-affiliated businesses, as well as green projects in Uganda. The agreement involves a credit worth UGX16 Billion (approximately USD5 million). This move is expected to have a significant impact on the economic development and empowerment of these sectors in Uganda.

Empowering SMEs, Women, and Youth

The partnership between UDB and AGF will provide much-needed financial support to SMEs, which are the backbone of Uganda’s economy. By ensuring access to credit, these businesses will have the opportunity to grow, create jobs, and contribute to economic development. Women and Youth-affiliated businesses, in particular, will benefit from this initiative as they often face challenges in accessing finance. By empowering these groups, the partnership is helping to promote gender equality and youth entrepreneurship in Uganda.

Promoting Sustainable Development

In addition to supporting SMEs, Women, and Youth, the partnership also aims to promote green projects in Uganda. By providing resources for environmentally sustainable initiatives, UDB and AGF are contributing to the country’s efforts in combating climate change and promoting sustainable development. This aligns with global goals such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which emphasize the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable practices.

Impact on Uganda

The partnership between UDB and AGF is expected to have a positive impact on Uganda’s economy. By increasing access to finance for SMEs, Women, and Youth-affiliated businesses, the initiative will spur economic growth, create employment opportunities, and drive innovation. Additionally, by supporting green projects, the partnership is helping to build a more sustainable and resilient economy in Uganda.

Conclusion

The partnership between Uganda Development Bank and African Guarantee Fund is a significant step towards promoting sustainable lending to SMEs, Women, and Youth-affiliated businesses in Uganda. By providing financial support to these sectors, the initiative is not only empowering entrepreneurs but also contributing to economic growth and sustainable development in the country. This collaboration sets a positive example for other financial institutions and governments to prioritize inclusive and green finance for a more prosperous future.
