Urgent Action Needed: Down-Sizing Parliament for the Betterment of Uganda

The conversations to reduce the size of Parliament

By Michael Aboneka

The conversations to reduce the size of Parliament are not new, only that the talks do not come to fruition. Before I go further into discussing this issue, I want to state that indeed our Parliament is bloated and needs to be unclogged. Uganda, with the smallest economy and population, has the biggest number of representatives in Parliament compared to countries with larger populations and economies.

Reducing the size of Parliament is an urgent matter that needs to be addressed. The current size of Parliament is unsustainable and inefficient. With a smaller number of representatives, decisions can be made more efficiently and effectively. There will be less bureaucracy and red tape, leading to quicker decision-making processes.

Furthermore, downsizing Parliament will also lead to cost savings for the government. With fewer representatives, there will be reduced expenses on salaries, allowances, and other perks enjoyed by members of Parliament. This money can be redirected towards more important areas such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.

It is time for the government to take action and downsize Parliament as a matter of urgency. The benefits of a smaller and more efficient Parliament are clear, and it is time to make this a reality for the betterment of our country.

How will this affect me?

As a citizen, downsizing Parliament will have a direct impact on you. With a more efficient and effective decision-making process, you can expect better governance and services from the government. Cost savings from downsizing can also lead to improvements in public services such as healthcare and education.

How will this affect the world?

Downsizing Parliament in Uganda can set a precedent for other countries facing similar issues of bloated legislatures. This move can inspire other nations to reevaluate the size of their Parliaments and work towards a more efficient governance system. Ultimately, this can lead to better governance globally and improved cooperation between nations.

Conclusion

It is clear that downsizing Parliament is a necessary step towards improving governance and efficiency in Uganda. The benefits of a smaller Parliament are undeniable, and it is time for the government to take action on this matter. By reducing the size of Parliament, we can expect better decision-making processes, cost savings, and overall improvements in public services. It is time to unclog our bloated Parliament and work towards a more efficient and effective governance system.
