UMSC Plans to Conduct Muslim Census

Finding Out How Many of Us Are Out There

His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, has announced plans to conduct a nationwide Muslim Census to determine the approximate Muslim population in Uganda. This was part of his speech delivered after Friday Juma prayers at Masjid Abubakar in Mbarara City, Ankole-Kigezi Muslim Region, Western Uganda, on October 11, 2024. The decision to conduct the census comes after years of speculation and estimates about the number of Muslims in the country.

With the census, the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) aims to have a more accurate count of the Muslim population in Uganda. This data will enable them to better serve the needs of the Muslim community in terms of religious activities, education, healthcare, and other social services. It will also help in planning for future growth and development of Islamic institutions and infrastructure across the country.

Why Conduct a Muslim Census?

Having an accurate count of the Muslim population is crucial for various reasons. Firstly, it will provide the UMSC with valuable insights into the demographic distribution of Muslims in Uganda. This information will help in identifying areas where the Muslim community is underserved and in need of more support.

Secondly, the census will help in dispelling any misconceptions or stereotypes about the Muslim population in Uganda. By having concrete data on the number of Muslims in the country, the UMSC can address any misinformation and promote a better understanding of Islam and its followers.

How Will This Affect Me?

As a Muslim living in Uganda, the census will directly impact you by providing a more accurate representation of the Muslim community in the country. This will enable the UMSC to tailor its services and programs to better meet your needs and those of your fellow Muslims. It will also help in ensuring that the resources and support available to the Muslim community are distributed equitably across different regions.

How Will This Affect the World?

While the Muslim census in Uganda may seem like a localized initiative, its impact goes beyond the borders of the country. Accurate data on the Muslim population in Uganda can provide valuable insights into the broader trends and dynamics of Islam in Africa. It can also serve as a model for other countries looking to conduct similar censuses to better understand their Muslim populations.

In Conclusion

The decision to conduct a nationwide Muslim Census in Uganda is a significant step towards better understanding and serving the needs of the Muslim community in the country. By having accurate data on the Muslim population, the UMSC can work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for Muslims across Uganda.
